“Africa and the Shifting Geopolitical Landscape: Tackling Insecurities and Seizing Opportunities in a Multipolarizing World.”

Following the success of the Model African Union Bayreuth Conference in 2022, we are pleased to announce the 2025 edition of the conference, focusing on a critical and timely topic: “Africa and the Shifting Geopolitical Landscape: Tackling Insecurities and Seizing Opportunities in a Multipolarizing World.”

This year’s conference will explore Africa’s role in the evolving global order. It will examine both the challenges posed by shifting geopolitical dynamics and the opportunities emerging for the continent. Thought leaders, policymakers, and experts from Africa and beyond will participate and enrich the overall experience of the event.
The discussions will focus on how Africa can strengthen its position globally amids global power shifts, with particular attention to:
• The effects of global power shifts on Africa’s political, economic, and security landscape.
• The importance of stronger intra-African cooperation in education, security, trade, and digitalization.
• The role of education and capacity-building in preparing African youth for technological innovation, digital transformation, and increased political participation.

The theme of this year’s conference is particularly relevant, as Africa navigates significant internal geopolitical changes amid a shifting global order marked by the rise of multiple power centers and the decline of unipolar or bipolar dominance. The formation of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) and growing competition from global players such as the EU, China, Russia, and the U.S. are expected to impact Africa’s political and security landscape. However, these dynamics also present opportunities to reshape international cooperation and enhance Africa’s global standing.
In the past Africa has been viewed primarily as a battleground for external powers. Against this backdrop, BAYMAU25 aims to explore how African nations can chart their own course—aligning with their domestic priorities while strategically navigating external influences.

Africa in a Multipolarizing World

This year’s conference will bring together students, young professionals, and thought leaders to discuss critical issues such as regional security, geopolitical realignments, and the strategic opportunities available to African nations in a rapidly evolving global order.

Participants will also practice leadership and diplomacy skills during simulations of the African Union’s decision-making processes.
