The Committees 2025

During the Model African Union Bayreuth Conference 2025, the delegates will be able to discuss the following topics in one of the three Committees:

                      

Specialised Technical Committees (STCs) are thematic Committees and are answerable to the Executive Council. Each STC is composed of Member States’ ministers and senior officials responsible for sectors falling within their respective areas of competence.

STC on Finance, Monetary Affairs, Economic Planning and Integration

This first STC is the prime forum for African ministers responsible for finance, economy, planning, integration and economic development, as well as central bank governors, to discuss matters about the development of Africa. This STC is also charged with following up on implementation of the integration agenda for the continent.

Fiona Faye

Chair

Fiona Faye is a doctoral researcher from University of Kassel working on the role of trade and other economic policies for the quest of food self-sufficiency under the presidency of Thomas Sankara. She has an M.A. in Global Political Economy and Development and a B.A. in African Development Studies in Geography, and Economics. She volunteers for the transnational network afrique-europe-interact, the Thomas Sankara online archive www.thomassankara.net and is a founding member of MAU Bayreuth e.V.

Omolewa Shobogun

Chair

Omolewa Shobogun is a master’s student in Interdisciplinary African Studies at the
Universities of Bayreuth, Porto, and Bordeaux-Montaigne as an Erasmus Mundus scholar. She
focuses on political economy, public policy, government and institutional strengthening, and
development cooperation.
She is the founder and executive director of Ubuntu Leadership Education for Development
Initiative (ULEDi), formerly Africa Raisers Initiative. She believes that leadership is the most
important element required for Africa’s development. She started ULEDi five years ago to raise
moral, innovative, effective, and efficient young African leaders through leadership education
programs. For the past four years, Omolewa and her team at ULEDi have hosted the Lead for
Development African Conference (LEDAC), which brings together speakers and participants
from across Africa and the diaspora to discuss and proffer solutions to Africa’s development
challenges.
Omolewa has a deep-seated interest in formulating innovative and people-centred policies to
solve Africa’s problems.


STC on Education, Science and Technology

This STC works on elaborating, adopting and monitoring implementation of the African Continental Strategy for Education and the Continental Strategy for Technical and Vocational Education and Training; ensuring Member States provide education data to the African Observatory for Education and the African Observatory of Science, Technology and Innovation (AOSTI); establishing performance indicators for and receiving reports from relevant national, regional and continental agencies and institutions; monitoring implementation of the Science, Technology and Innovation Strategy for Africa (STISA 2024); engaging with Member States, international development partners and the African Diaspora to mobilize resources; overseeing the promotion, coordination and strengthening of programmes in response to the Sustainable Development Goals.

Bekir Arik

Chair

Bekir Arik is a student of cultural studies at the University of the Federal
Armed Forces in Munich. During his studies, he is currently working as a
student assistant for religious studies and has a voluntary position at the
Munich Refugee Council.
Arik is also learning French and Arabic during his studies. He took part in excursions in North Africa and
the USA, especially New York, with permanent missions and did an internship at the German Embassy in
Kenya, where nations such as Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Somalia and Rwanda participated.
Arik gained his first experience of conferences as a delegate at the Model United Nations in New York in
2023. In 2024 he received the Young Champions award from the UNHCR. During his studies, he was
also a project officer at the Munich Security Conference 61 this year.

 STC on Gender and Women’s Empowerment

This STC’s role includes advocating for: ratification and implementation of AU policies and instruments on gender equality, women’s empowerment and women’s rights; promotion and protection of all human rights for women, including implementation of Member States’ obligations and commitments made under international, continental, regional and country-level human rights law; promotion of gender-responsive practices and realisation of commitments to the human rights of women.
